Northampton County, Virginia is the southernmost of the 2 counties of Virginia's Eastern Shore.
At one point, entire eastern shore of Virginia was called Northampton County but was split into
2 counties in 1663 and Accomack County was given back it's original name.
In 1651 a Virginia proclamation required each county to choose a sheriff. Northampton County
commissioners decided to allow the people who live in the county to elect their sheriff. As a result,
William Waters was the very first elected sheriff in the United States in 1651.
These Virginia eastern shore counties were not part of the confederacy during the Civil War and were
held by the forces of the United States government.
